After you have completed tagging your highlights with codes, uploading your demographics should be the final step in your process.
Creating your Excel Demographics Sheet
To start, you should create an excel sheet with tabs representing the demographics you would like incorporated. There are two required tabs that your sheet should have; Conversation ID and Name.
Two important things to note:
- The conversation ID are the four numbers shown at the end of your conversation URL
- Make sure all of your name edits to the transcript have been made on Fora and that they match the exact spelling of the name on your demographics excel sheet. If the spelling on your sheet and the spelling of names on Fora do not match, the demographics will not be matched with the person to whom the demographics should belong to.
Below is an example of a demographics sheet which includes "Borough" as one of the demographics to include:
You can choose to add any demographic information that is most useful to you and the scope of your project. A good key to thinking about what demographics to include is, what demographic information will help you make sense of your data the most?
Once you have added all demographics fields on your sheet, convert it to a CSV file.
Uploading your Demographics Excel Sheet
Navigate over to your codebook and scroll down to the section that says "Demographics"
Click the Upload Demographics icon on the far right and select your Demographics excel sheet.
After you upload your sheet, you will see that demographic type was created as a parent code, with the entries nested underneath as child codes. You will also notice that the demographic will be matched with the names of those represented as speakers within each highlight box.
Please note: If you need to make any edits to your demographics sheet, the entire sheet will need to be re-uploaded.
